Book Review: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

With The Hate U Give starting in theaters a week from now, I’m sure most of the people seeing this review are wondering if they should read the book first and to that I say YES. If you have the means to read a book first, it’s always worth it. Every movie based on a book throws in little things for the book fans like bonus references the general population wouldn’t get.

Sad books are especially important to read first. You just can’t reach the emotional depth in 2-3 hours that you can reach with a book. People who haven’t read the book will probably ask why you’re sobbing in the theatre in the first 10 minutes but the other people sobbing will understand you.

This book will probably tear you up. The story follows the aftermath of the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager as the community tries to grieve and get justice for him in a system that is built for control not for justice.

5/5 Stars. This is one of the best and most important books I’ve read and I recommend everyone read it. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll want to burn things.
