I picked this up first for a Diverse Books challenge that called for OwnVoices Asian Representation. I got that, of course, but I also got a light dystopia hiding a darker dystopia with superheroes and supervillains and government surveillance and cute superpowered girlfriends.
So some radiation from the sun hit and it destroyed a bunch of stuff worldwide and activated latent powers in a good chunk of the population. Nuclear power plants melted down and caused people to have to settle into specifically cleaned up areas and ration their resources to survive so cars drive themselves and everyone is mostly vegetarian and robots clean people’s houses and thunderstorms mean blackouts.
To distract from all this, the heroes publicize and market their battles with villains creating a government run entertainment industry to make the public feel safe.
I can’t say much more without spoiling stuff so you’ll have to read it yourselves. I absolutely recommend this book, which is the first in the Sidekick Squad series.
